This was dad's unusual find at the
Temple show. It is a 2 foot long Cedar pole tip off a
litter from the Great Mortuary of the Spiro Mound. I have
imcluded a photo from our book showing one of these
litters. This relic is from the Jimmy Durham Collection, dad first saw this piece at the Bob Melrose auction, where many items from the Durham collection were sold. Photograph 46: June 1937, looking Northwest: Looking at a "Litter Feature" in the Great Mortuary This photograph was taken in June 1937, looking to the northwest... This view shows the cedar poles and conch shell caches from features XB7, B155A and B156, as shown in Brown (1996) Figure 1-30, "Great Mortuary floor plan." The Great Mortuary was originally encountered by the Pocola Mining Company tunnel that penetrated the "hollow chamber" in the center of the large cone on the north end of The Spiro Mound during the summer of 1935 and was dug by them until November 27, 1935. |
